Influenza and pneumonia together comprise the seventh leading cause of death among adults in the U.S and were responsible for 65,163 deaths in 2003 and an average of 36,000 deaths per year in the United States from 1990 to 1999. Vaccination is efficacious and cost-effective in terms of preventing the infection and reducing both health care costs and productivity losses associated with influenza illness. The vaccine shortage of 2004–2005 resulted in a 39% decrease in the influenza vaccine supplies.
