An analysis of the reading activities in EFL coursebooks

Curs 2020-2021The purpose of this study is to analyze how EFL reading is taught in foreign language coursebooks in Catalonia., Two strategies to make reading more effective are presented: 1) Questioning strategy where questions are classified according to the basis of Bloom’s Taxonomy, and 2) Three-Phase Approach, a model which claims that activities have to be distributed before, during and after the reading. Four textbooks (Beep 6, Bugs World 6, Great Explorers 6 and Tiger Tracks 6) have been examined through a checklist to know how reading is presented. The data collected were analysed to identify the presence of reading activities, their organization, the level’s cognition that they demand and the types of reading activities. Results show that textbooks are a good tool to teach reading if combined with other resources.L'objectiu d'aquest estudi és analitzar com s'ensenya la lectura en els llibres de text de llengua estrangera a Catalunya. Per a això, es presenten dues estratègies que fan que la lectura sigui efectiva: 1) Questioning strategy, una estratègia on es classifiquen les preguntes segons la base de la Taxonomia de Bloom, i 2) Three Phase Approach, un model que afirma que cal distribuir les activitats abans, durant i després de la lectura. Per fer-ho, s'han examinat quatre llibres de text (Beep 6, Bugs World 6, Great Explorers 6 i Tiger Tracks 6) a través d'una checklist per conèixer com es presenta la lectura. Les dades recollides es van analitzar per identificar la presència d'activitats de lectura, la seva organització, el nivell de cognició que exigeixen i els tipus d'activitats. Els resultats mostren que els llibres de text són una bona eina per ensenyar a llegir si es combinen amb altres recursos
