The issue of brownfields has been acknowledged for a long time in various countries around the world and has been gaining awareness since the 1990s. A shift away from traditional industrial and commercial sites from the city centers has left many urban spaces with abandoned, derelict of under used areas, as well as creating such sites in areas that are experiencing rural depopulation. Austria and the Region of Flanders in Belgium are both areas that are experiencing the pressures of land consumption on still available greenfields. It is estimated, that if Austria continues on this path of land consumption, that in 200 years there will be no more land available for agricultural purposes.
