X. fastidiosa is a gram-negative bacterium that affects plants' xylem, has no curative treatment and may affect over 300 plant species. Its progression is extremely rapid and may kill vineyards, olive and almond trees, citruses and some fruit trees among many other species within a few weeks. Nowadays, the only available tools for controlling it are based on preventing its infection with measures on the transmitting insects. The insect Philaenus spumarius has been identified as the bacterium's main vector. The first outbreak out of control of X. fastidiosa in Europe in the south of Italy and its more than likely arrival to Catalonia in the near future make the study of this insect even more important in order to minimize damage and disperse...
