The discussion and experimental work given int the following pages are, to a large extent, preliminary to that for the Ph.D. thesis. The latter will deal with "Heat Changes in the Neighbourhood of the Critical Temperature". This will involve the determination of the specific heats of compressed gases and liquids in the neighbourhood of the critical temperature, to see whether there are energy changes at this point which would correspond to the discontinuities in the usual PV-P curves above the critical temperature. This work, it is hoped, will also lead to theoritical deductions of the specific heats of liquids, as the continual and gradual change from gas to liquid will be followed by specific heat measurements
