In the spring of 1923 the tomato crop in the commercial greenhouses at Macdonald College became infested with streak or winter blight. This disease manifested itself by streaks on the stems and petioles, a spotting, curling and shrivelling of the leaves, and irregular brown spots on the fruit, all of which resulted, in the majority of cases, in complete wilting of the whole plant. In other cases a long spindling growth of the upper part of the plant was evident. It was characterised by its sudden onset and virulent nature, and resulted in a loss of one third of the crop.
