Vesicular glutamate transporters 1-3 (VGLUT1-3) are proteins that package glutamate into synaptic vesicles before subsequent release into the synaptic cleft. In the brain, while VGLUT1 & 2 are expressed almost entirely in neurons that only release glutamate, VGLUT3 is located primarily in neurons that release alternate neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine (ACh), serotonin (5-HT) and γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA). While the role of VGLUT3 in ACh and 5-HT neurons has been well-characterized, no published research has been done on the effects of VGLUT3 in the hippocampus, where it is expressed in select GABAergic and 5-HT fibers.
