The nonconforming voxel finite element method (NVFEM) avoids many of the difficulties of traditional mesh generation by using a nested grid of cubic finite elements. Its main drawback is the need to approximate boundaries that would otherwise pass through the interior of the elements, resulting in loss of accuracy and slow convergence. In this thesis, a technique called the computed basis function (CBF) method is applied, that permits material discontinuities within the elements. In CBF-NVFEM, a local, temporary mesh of cubic sub-elements is superimposed on each nonuniform element.
