A study of the morphology of the genitalia of some Ipidae (Coleoptera).

A comparatively small amount of work has been done on the morphology of the genitalia of the members of the family Ipidae. Dr. Otto Nusslin, in Germany, has published some of his work on the phylogeny of the group according to the morphology, in "Zeitschrift fur wissenschaftliahe Insektenbiologie", Vols. 7 and 8, 1910 and 1911. Dr. A. D. Hopkins, in U.S.D.A.., Bull. No.17, "A Preliminary Classification of the Super-family Scolytoides", Pt. 11, 1915, gives a vary general review of the subject from a comparative standpo1nt, andDr. J. M. Swaine includes a few figures of internal structures in his Dominion Dept. of Agriculture Bull. No.14, 1918. This paper was undertaken at the suggestion of Dr. J M. Swaine, Associate Dominion Entomologist, in an endeavor to clear up certain problems of specificity in three genera of bark-beetles, viz. 9 Dryocoetes, Xyloterinus and Trypodendron.This thesis thus represents an attempt towards adding soma data of importance to our knowledge of the morphology and taxonomy of these three genera of the Ipidae.
