Factoring endpoint addressing (port numbers) into a separate {\em Endpoint Layer} permits incremental rollout of new or improved transports at OS or application level, enables transport-oblivious firewall/NAT traversal, improves transport negotiation efficiency, and simplifies endpoint address space administration.
