This contribution deals with the model-based detection of hazardous states in chemical reactors. The runaway criteria known from literature are either not applicable on-line or they are only applicable to simple kinetics or a certain type of reactor. An intrinsic on-line runaway criterion has been developed based on parametric sensitivity. The power of the new early warning systems is shown for the continuous oxidation of ethanol by hydrogen peroxide. copyright Oldenbourg Verlag [accessed 2014 March 31st
