The identification of the two molybdenum sub-oxides, Mo<sub>18</sub>O<sub>52</sub> and Mo<sub>8</sub>O<sub>23</sub>, derived from MoO<sub>3</sub> by crystallographic shearing (CS), by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The CS structure produces well-ordered satellite spots in electron diffraction pattern and can be directly imaged by high-resolution TEM is demonstrated. The results are compared with other two molybdenum sub-oxides, Mo<sub>5</sub>O<sub>14</sub> and Mo<sub>4</sub>O<sub>11</sub>, without CS structure
