High efficiency solar cells require large surface layers as acceptor. Nanoporous titanium dioxide film is an optimum choice for that purpose. A variety of polymer gels with different chem. compn., architecture, porosity, and surface area have been used as templating materials for the fabrications of nanoporous TiO2 networks. The resulting networks have vastly different structure, with the porosities as high as 99% and surface areas ranging from 5 to 100 m2g-1.
