This paper describes the optimum design for film-type low-twist-angle nematic liquid crystal displays (FLTN-LCDs) using a computer simulation of the dynamic behavior of the liquid crystal molecules. The numerical calculation shows that the response time of the FLTN-LCDs is 3 times faster than that of conventional TN-LCDs. To imprcve the other electro-optical characteristics, we determined that the twist angle should be about 60°, then we optimized the material and the design parameters of the FLTN-LCDs for that twist angle. Under the optimized conditions, we were able to obtain FLTN-LCDs with good electro-optical characteristics, such as fast response time, good gray-scale capability, high contrast ratio, and wide viewing angle
