Throughout the 20th century, legal rules on piracy were largely perceived as historical relicts in national and international codifications and were only rarely applied in practice. It was only with the upsurge of pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia in 2008 that the law on piracy came to the fore again. This contribution provides an overview of selected national legal frameworks of African states pertaining to piracy and armed robbery at sea. It further deals with the question of what regional legislative approaches could be taken in order to prevent, suppress, and prosecute piracy more effectively.
