Nanoparticulate drug carriers have been proposed for the targeted and controlled release of pharmaceuticals to the lung. However, inhaled particles may adversely affect the biophysical properties of pulmonary surfactant. This study examines the influence of polymeric nanoparticles with distinct physicochemical properties on the adsorption and dynamic surface tension lowering properties of pulmonary surfactant. Nanoparticles had a mean size of 100 nm with narrow size distributions.
