The invention of the microscope made it possible for people to study the structure of matter below the millimeter scale. Unfortunately the smallest details which can be resolved by conventional techniques, such as confocal microscopy, are limited due to the diffraction limit. Therefore people have been trying to develop techniques to circumvent this limit and increase the resolution. I worked on such a method called Stimulated Emission Depletion, or STED. In STED one uses two different beams, one which is called the excitation beam and one which is called the depletion beam. The excitation beam is used to cause a fluorescence signal.
