Breastfeeding beyond the year. Criticism, beliefs, and corporality

Objetivo:Análisis de la lactancia desde su importancia simbólica en la creación de relaciones y vínculos sociales. Objetivos: Analizar el papel que las madres otorgan a la lactancia en la construcción de la persona y en los vínculos de parentesco e indagar el orden simbólico que sustenta las críticas y/o presiones que reciben cuando amamantan sin restricciones.Material y Método: Metodología cualitativa: entrevistas en profundidad a madres lactantes y observación participante en grupos de apoyo a la lactancia.Resultados y conclusiones: Para las madres, la lactancia constituiría una importante contribución en la formación biopsicosocial de unos hijo/as que se convertirán en individuos libres. Sin embargo, habían recibido críticas o presiones por amamantar sin restricciones. Las críticas aumentaban a medida que el bebé se iba convirtiendo en niño/a. Estas críticas se basaban en: la dependencia materno-filial; el “malcriar” a los hijo/as; la obscenidad de lactar en público y la acusación de “neo-machistas”. Estos puntos desvelan un orden simbólico individualista que vertebra la (pos)Modernidad y un determinado control social basado en el uso de los cuerpos y sus fluidos. Las madres suelen legitimar sus lactancias a partir de discursos biologicistas, donde “seguir el instinto” se presenta como un impulso para la toma de decisiones.Aim: Analyzing breastfeeding since the perspective of it symbolic importance in the built of relationships and social bonds. Objectives: 1) Analyze the role that mothers give to breastfeeding in the construction of human being and the relationship; 2) Investigate the symbolic order that supports criticism and/or pressures received by mothers when decided nurse their kids with no restrictions of time or place.Materials and Method: Qualitative methodology: In-depth interviews to nursing mothers and participative observation in breastfeeding support groups.Results and Conclusions: For mothers, breastfeeding was an important contribution to biopsychosocial formation of children that would become free individuals. However, these mothers had received criticism or pressure for breastfeeding without restrictions. Criticism increased as the baby was becoming a child. These criticisms were based on the mother-child dependence; the "spoil" children; the obscenity of breastfeeding in public and the accusation of “neo-sexist”. These points reveal an individualistic symbolic order that structures (post) modernity and a certain social control based on the use of bodies and fluids. Mothers often legitimize their feedings from biologicist speeches where "follow the instinct" comes as a boost for making individual decisions
