The purpose of this project is to show that 3D printing can be used as a cheaper and faster alternative to expensive machining when proving concepts in the Structural Engineering field, while also providing a novel concept in passive damping in the process. Passive damping involves the dissipation of energy through means that do not require outside control while it acts. This damping concept utilizes 3D printed, cam shaped objects to create friction between two plates as they slide across each other, which simulates a building swaying back and forth. The increased friction caused by the cam hence dissipates the energy that causes the plates to move. This damping concept is applicable to tall buildings that are subject to wind forces and ear...
