GIS: En ny generations kunskap : Geografilärares inställning och implementering av geografiska informationssystem för gymnasiet

The purpose of this study was to examine how geography teachers implement GIS in the class room and examine how they interpret GIS, their attitude towards the implement of it in the curriculum for secondary schools and if it is beneficial to geopgraphy and students learning. Seven interviews were conducted individually, six geography teachers and the person who wrote the curriculum for geography in secondary school. The study revelas that the variation of the teachers education in GIS affect the way they educate their students in GIS. The teachers who were educated in GIS recently are using the tool to teach their students geographical subjects, while the others were often teaching their students about the tool, because they felt that there was lack of time to succesfully teach them more. Some of the teachers were uncertain to what extent they had to implement GIS in their education. All teachers thought GIS was a great tool for learning geography, but they also thought that it could be beneficial in other school related subjects. To make GIS relate closer to the curriculum, teachers need to improve pedagogical content knowledge about the subject, and the way teachers get educated in GIS need to adapt moore in how GIS could be used to learn geography
