This paper has three sections. In the first, I state and defend the thesis - which I take to be the major theoretical insight of nationalism - that in the modern world culture is and ought to be an integral part of politics. This thesis is embodied in the concept of the nation-state. In the second, I discuss some of the implications of the nationalist thesis, particularly with respect to "multi-nation states." In the third, I make some suggestions as to how to meet the claims of indigenous peoples within the nation-state.15 page(s
