Purpose: To provide an alternative focus on the gender imbalance on corporate boards and in executive positions in Australia, by moving away from the traditional focus on skills, education and experience, and examining the effects absences from the work force may have on key work relationships and access to critical networks. Originality: This research will be the first study to examine the decay or deterioration of key relationships and levels of social capital for women after absences from the workplace in Australia.
