Over the past decade, the demands of the ADF's global and regional operations saw an unprecedented growth in Australia's special operations capability. Special operations forces (SOF) became the 'capability of choice' for the Australian Government, especially in more threatening environments such as Iraq and Afghanistan. SOF's ability to conduct highly sensitive military missions (including combat and non-combat operations), to operate in complex terrain and to do so at short notice, made them a very attractive military instrument.
