Den anpassningsbara bibliotekarien : Livslångt lärande kopplat till digitalisering för folkbibliotekarier

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine how librarians reflect on their own learning in their workplace, with a focus on digitization. The purpose is to get an improved understanding about how librarians feel about the need for constant development, both at an individual and organizational level, how, when and why they learn, and in what situations. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach with the data being collected through seven interviews with librarians working in public libraries in southern Sweden. To analyze the data, and also as a theoretical basis, the authors used a combination of previous research and learning theories developed by Knud Illeris. The study shows that the librarians have a positive attitude toward digitization of the libraries, that they view competence development like a natural part of their profession, that some personality traits, mainly flexibility and curiosity, are key for a successful personal development, that more time reserved for more formal education is needed on the libraries and that most of their development is occurs by informal learning in collaboration with their colleagues and library patrons. The authors hope that the results from this study can be used as a sort of guidance for library managers when is comes to making decisions concerning development on their library.
