Teaching and Learning English of Cognitively Delayed Students at A Junior High School for Disabled Students (SMPLB)Negeri Selat Kapuas Central Kalimantan in Academic Year 2009- 2010

Hum.\ud \ud SMPLB Negeri Selat Kapuas is a public school educational institution for children with special needs who provide education with different subjects, of which one of them is English. So that students can know the English language and preparing students earlier to attend the National Exam. It is because English is a lesson that should be tested to SMP or SMPLB.\ud The problem of this research is how the English teaching and learning process of cognitively delayed students at SMPLB Negeri Selat Kapuas and the factors influence the teaching and learning process.\ud This study aims at determining teaching and learning English of cognitively delayed students at SMPLB Negeri Selat Kapuas and the factors that influence it. Subject in this study is one English teacher and the students of SMPLB Negeri Selat Kapuas from grade VII to grade IX. While the object of this research is the process of teaching and learning English for cognitively delayed students and the factors that influence it in SMPLB Negeri Selat Kapuas\ud The writer collected data using several techniques namely observation, interviews and documentation with data sources English teacher, head master and other staff. The data have been collected are processed through data reduction, data display and verification decision. The data is then analyzed by descriptive qualitative and take conclusions using inductive methods.\ud From these results, the writer concluded that the teaching and learning English in cognitively delayed students at the SMPLB Negeri Selat Kapuas was performed well, it can be seen from the syllabus and lesson plans created by English teacher for one semester, the implementation of learning activities carried out are; delivery of materials with the use of varied methods and use of teaching media. And evaluation is also used in teaching and learning process.There are some factors that less support such as English teacher who have English skills appropriate to their fields, but the teacher did not graduate from PLB. Although, it is limited condition and situation in SMPLB Negeri Selat Kapuas, the English teacher tries hardly to improve the cognitively delayed students’ knowledge especially in English
