Objective. To describe suicide rates by county size in the five geopolitical areas of Brazil. Methods. This was an ecological, descriptive study of suicide deaths in Brazil that occurred among the population 10 years of age and older in 2004-2010. Data were obtained from the National Mortality Information System of Brazil. Counties were defined by size as: very large (200 000+), large (< 200 000-100 000), medium (< 100 000-50 000), small (< 50 000-20 000), very small (< 20 000-10 000, and micro (< 10 000). Age-adjusted suicide rates were calculated for all counties and for population-size groups in each geopolitical area.
