Calorimetric investigation of the interaction of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) and ionic surfactants

Estudou-se a interação do polímero poli (N-isopropilacrilamida), PNIPAM, com surfatantes iônicos utilizando a técnica de titulação calorimétrica e temperaturas na faixa de 17 a 29°C. Para tal estudo foram utilizados um surfatante aniônico, o dodecil sulfato de sódio, SDS, e três catiônicos, brometos de dodecil e hexadeciltrimetilamônio, DTAB e CTAB, e cloreto de dodecilamônio, DAC. A técnica empregada é muito sensível e permite a determinação precisa dos parâmetros que caracterizam a interação polímero-surfatante. Através dos resultados obtidos é possível concluir que a interação do polímero PNIPAM com surfatantes iônicos é fortemente influenciada pela temperatura. Esse comportamento pode ser atribuído à mudança na hidratação da cadeia polimérica, que se torna mais importante próximo da temperatura mínima de solubilidade do polímero. A natureza, a hidrofobicidade da cadeia e o tamanho do grupo polar do surfatante interferem na intensidade de interação polímero -surfatante. A interação é mais intensa ao utilizar o surfatante aniônico do que os surfatantes catiônicos. O CTAB apresenta interação mais intensa do que o DTAB, que apresenta o mesmo grupo polar e cadeia menor. O DAC, que possui grupo catiônico menor, interage mais intensamente com o PNIPAM do que o outro surfatante que apresenta a mesma cadeia, DTAB.The interaction of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM, with an anionic (SDS) and three cationic (dodecyl and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromides, DTAB and CTAB, and dodecylammonium chloride, DAC) surfactants has been studied using isothermal titration calorimetry and within a temperature range between 17 and 29°C. The high sensitivity of this technique allows the precise determination of the parameters that characterize polymer-surfactant interactions. Based on these results, it is possible to conclude that the interaction of PNIPAM with ionic surfactants is significantly affected by temperature. This is attributed to changes in polymer hydration, which become more important near the lower critical solution temperature. The nature and the size of the headgroup, and the hydrophobicity of the hydrocarbon chain of the surfactants are important factors and interfere on the polymer-surfactant interaction. The interaction is more intense with the anionic than with the cationic surfactants. CTAB, which possesses the same headgroup and larger chain length than DTAB displays a more intense interaction than DTAB. DAC, which possesses the same chain length and smaller headgroup than DTAB, interacts more strongly with PNIPAM than DTAB.
