O vírus respiratório sincicial humano (HRSV) é principal agente causador de infecções do trato respiratório inferior em crianças e lactentes. Um diagnóstico rápido e preciso evitaria o uso desnecessário de antibióticos, nos casos em que a infecção é viral. A reação em cadeia da polimerase após transcrição reversa (RT-PCR) e o ensaio de imunofluorescência indireta (IFI) são considerados ferramentas importantes na detecção do HRSV, pela alta sensibilidade e especificidade.
