A síndrome do desconforto respiratório (SDR) é causada pela deficiência transitória de surfactante pulmonar em recém-nascidos (RN) prematuros nos primeiros dias de vida. Estudos sugerem que a etiologia da SDR seja multifatorial e multigênica. A proteína B do surfactante (SP-B) é fundamental para o metabolismo do surfactante e para uma função pulmonar normal. A presença de polimorfismos e mutações em genes dos componentes do surfactante, particularmente no gene da SP-B, parece estar associada à SDR.
