Microscopic evaluation of the pulpal response of dog's teeth covered with mineral trioxide aggregate, portland cement and white portland cement after pulpotomy

A idéia de se proteger e manter a vitalidade pulpar não é recente. Vários materiais têm sido preconizados com tal finalidade, no entanto, nenhum ainda pode ser considerado o material ideal, por este motivo compreende-se a importância e o interesse sempre crescente pela evolução dos estudos em torno deste assunto. Levando-se em consideração alguns relatos sobre a semelhança de composição química entre o agregado trióxido mineral (MTA) e o cimento de Portland, foi objetivo deste estudo desenvolver novas estratégias de tratamento na terapia da polpa vital, analisando o comportamento da polpa dentária de dentes de cão após pulpotomia e proteção direta do remanescente pulpar com o MTA Ângelus, ProRoot MTA, cimento Portland e cimento Portland branco. Foram utilizados 76 dentes, divididos de maneira aleatória para cada material. Após o período de 120 dias os animais foram sacrificados, os espécimes removidos e preparados para análise histológica para verificação do reparo do complexo dentino-pulpar. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que os efeitos sobre o complexo dentino-pulpar após pulpotomia em dentes de cães e recobrimento pulpar com ProRoot MTA, MTA Angelus, cimento Portland e cimento Portland branco foram semelhantes entre si, permitindo a neoformação de tecido mineralizado e a manutenção da vitalidade do tecido conjuntivo pulpar subjacente.The success of the pulpotomy is related to preserving vitality and function of the dental pulp after complete removal of its coronary portion and protection of the radicular pulp. Several materials have been used with such purpose, however, none of them present all physical, chemical and biologic properties desired, thus stimulating a search for alternative materials. Considering some reports about the similarity in composition of the mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Portland cement, the purpose of this study was to develop new treatment strategies in vital pulp therapy, analyzing the behavior of the dental pulp of dog’s teeth after pulpotomy and direct protection of the radicular pulp with MTA Angelus, ProRoot MTA, Portland cement and white Portland cement. Seventy six teeth were divided ramdomly for each material. After a period of 120 days the animals were sacrificed, the samples were removed and prepared for histologic evaluation to verify reparation of the dentin-pulp complex. The results demonstrated that the effects on the dentin-pulp complex after pulpotomy and pulp protection with ProRoot MTA, MTA Angelus, Portland cement and white Portland cement in dog’s teeeth were very similar, allowing formation of mineralized tissue and preservation of the vitality of the pulpal connective tissue below
