Tempos de intolerância: repressão aos estrangeiros durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial em Santa Catarina.

The crackdown against the populations of Italian and German origins living in the State of Santa Catarina, performed by the government of Getúlio Vargas during World War II, was linked to the country’s alignment with the United States against the Axis. This crackdown in action illustrates the political police intolerance during the Vargas’ regime. Men and women had their most basicrights violated, with restriction of coming and going and suppression of their freedom of speech and expression. Many were confined in concentration camps, far from the coast. This article shows some of these forms of repression in the context of the Brazilian approximation to the Allies, and the actions performed by the Social and Political Order Department (DOPS) to enforce it, as well as the population reactions to it.http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7976.2009v16n22p91A repressão do governo Vargas sobre as populações de origem ítalo- germânica residentes no Estado de Santa Catarina durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, na contingência do alinhamento do país com os Estados Unidos e contra o Eixo, fez mover ações onde se percebe a intolerância da polícia política. Homens e mulheres foram violentados nos seus direitos mais elementares, como o de ir e vir, o de falar e se expressar, e uma parte confinada em campos de concentração, ou afastada do litoral. Este texto mostra formas de repressão no contexto do alinhamento aos Aliados, as formas de ação do Departamento de Ordem Política e Social e como foram experimentadas pela população
