Blood and faith: writing and identity of Franciscans born in Iberian colonial spaces (Lima and Portuguese India, XVII century)

Analisam-se os escritos seiscentistas dos franciscanos Buenaventura Salinas Y Córdova (nascido em Lima) e de Miguel da Purificação (natural da Índia Portuguesa), redigidos em defesa de descendentes de espanhóis e portugueses nascidos no ultramar, com base na suposta nobreza de seus ancestrais, na lealdade à Coroa e ao catolicismo. Demonstra-se a semelhança de seus argumentos e as apropriações, na América e na Índia Portuguesa, dos sentidos de pureza de sangue desenvolvidos na Península Ibérica.Analyzed here are the 17th century writings of the Franciscans, Buenaventura Salinas Y Córdova (born in Lima) and Miguel da Purificação (a native of Portuguese India), written in defence of the descendants of Spaniards and Portuguese born overseas, based on the supposed nobility of their ancestors, their loyalty to the Crown and to Catholicism. It is demonstrated that there is similarity in their arguments and the appropriations, in America and Portuguese India, of the senses of blood purity developed on the Iberian Peninsula
