Corot light curves analysis using different comparative processes: estimating stellar rotation periods

Um dos principais objetivos do Grupo do CoRoT de Natal é a determinação do período de rotação para milhares de estrelas, um parâmetro fundamental para o estudo da história evolutiva estelar. Para estimar o período de rotação das estrelas e compreender as incertezas associadas resultantes, por exemplo, das descontinuidades nas curvas e (ou) das baixas razões sinal-ruído, comparamos três diferentes métodos para o tratamento das curvas de luz nesta dissertação. Estes métodos foram aplicados na análise de curvas de luz com diferentes características. Primeiro, uma Análise Visual foi realizada para cada curva de luz, dando uma perspectiva geral sobre os diferentes fenômenos destacados nas curvas. Os resultados obtidos por este método em relação ao período de rotação da estrela, a presença de manchas, ou a natureza da estrela (sistema binário ou outro) foram então comparados com aqueles obtidos por outros dois métodos mais precisos: o método CLEANest, com base na DCDFT (Date Compensated Discrete Fourier Transform), e o método Wavelet, com base na Transformada Wavelet. Nossos resultados mostram que os três métodos apresentam níveis similares de precisão e cada um pode complementar o outro. No entanto, o método Wavelet pode fornecer informações adicionais sobre a estrela estudada, a partir do mapa wavelet, mostrando as variações de freqüências no sinal ao longo do tempo. Finalmente, discutimos as limitações destes métodos, os níveis de eficiência em fornecer informações sobre a estrela, bem como o possível desenvolvimento de ferramentas para integrar métodos diferentes em uma única análiseOne of the main goals of CoRoT Natal Team is the determination of rotation period for thousand of stars, a fundamental parameter for the study of stellar evolutionary histories. In order to estimate the rotation period of stars and to understand the associated uncertainties resulting, for example, from discontinuities in the curves and (or) low signal-to-noise ratio, we have compared three different methods for light curves treatment. These methods were applied to many light curves with different characteristics. First, a Visual Analysis was undertaken for each light curve, giving a general perspective on the different phenomena reflected in the curves. The results obtained by this method regarding the rotation period of the star, the presence of spots, or the star nature (binary system or other) were then compared with those obtained by two accurate methods: the CLEANest method, based on the DCDFT (Date Compensated Discrete Fourier Transform), and the Wavelet method, based on the Wavelet Transform. Our results show that all three methods have similar levels of accuracy and can complement each other. Nevertheless, the Wavelet method gives more information about the star, from the wavelet map, showing the variations of frequencies over time in the signal.
