As ligas a base de magnésio têm recebido atenção especial para aplicação em materiais biomédicos, isso se deve as suas propriedades, como: resistência mecânica adequada, biocompatibilidade e biocorrosão. No entanto, a corrosão dessas ligas é acompanhada de uma intensa liberação de hidrogênio que é indesejável para a classe de matérias biomédicos. Zberg et al. mostraram uma significante diminuição da liberação de hidrogênio em ligas vítreas de Mg-Zn- Ca devido ao aumento no teor de zinco sem a formação de fases intermetálicas indesejáveis.
