Avifauna relacionada ao risco de colisões aéreas no Aeroporto Internacional Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek, Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brasil

The incidence of collisions between birds and aircraft tends to increase with urban growth. The damage caused by these collisions involves human and material aspects. With the purpose of determining the situation in Brasilia, a survey of the birds was conducted in 2009 at the Brasilia International Airport. The objectives of the study were to identify the birds in the airport area, to compare the national bird-strike reports with those reports from Brasilia, to detect and suggest preventative measures for this area. The censuses conducted in the areas near the runways indicated that at Brasilia Airport, the lapwing (Vanellus chilensis (MOLINA, 1782)) was the most abundant species, but the species that offered the greatest risk of collisions was the carcara (Caracara plancus (MILLER, 1777)). Points of attraction concerning these birds were detected in the region, such as foraging areas, termitaria and areas of grown vegetation used as nesting and hiding places. Preventative measures, such as bird scaring methods in critical situations, were suggested.A incidência de colisões entre aves e aeronaves tende a aumentar com o crescimento urbano. Os prejuízos causados por estas colisões envolvem aspectos materiais e humanos. Com o objetivo de estimar a situação de Brasília, foi realizado em 2009 um levantamento da avifauna no Aeroporto Internacional de Brasília. Os objetivos desse estudo foram identificar as aves presentes no aeroporto, comparar os relatos nacionais de colisões envolvendo aves com os relatos em Brasília, detectar e sugerir medidas preventivas para o local de estudo. Os censos realizados nas áreas próximas às pistas indicaram que no aeroporto de Brasília, o quero-quero (Vanellus chilensis (MOLINA, 1782)) foi a espécie mais abundante, porém a que oferece maior risco de colisões é o carcará (Caracara plancus (MILLER, 1777)). Foram detectados alguns focos de atração dessas aves para o local, como áreas para forrageamento, cupinzeiros e áreas de vegetação rasteira alta, utilizada para nidificação e refúgios. Medidas preventivas como métodos de afugentamento em situações emergenciais foram sugeridas
