This paper describes the principles of the contemporary approach to mathematical modeling of water quality in river channels and their networks, including the formulation of basic equations for the hydrophysical and chemical-biological processes involved, the role of longitudinal dispersion, and the initial and boundary conditions. Special emphasis is given to some specific questions related to the numerical computation of channel networks
