The Internet has become an important source of linguistic data, but it also presents several challenges, such as its characterisation in terms of discourse genres. In this article we present a definition of genre that takes into account the influence of social practices, as well as the flexibility of discourse genres. We examine the genre status of Web texts, and specifically social media genres. Finally, the article presents an analysis of climate change blogs, which indicates that the discursive heterogeneity in this field may question their status as a unified discourse genre
