European genetic conservation strategies of forest trees in the context of currently running climate change

The diversity of forests, at the level of species and at the level of genetic diversity within species, is an important resource for Europe. Over the past several decades countries have made efforts to conserve the diversity of tree species and genetic diversity. However, there was no harmonised approach to establishing or managing units for genetic conversation across |Europe. A project to address these shortcomings was established in 2005, and resulted in the development of the EUFGIS portal, in which countries have to date shared information on more than 320 conservation units and more than 400 individual populations of about 100 tree species
