This chapter opens by summarizing and critically reflecting on the Kundera case which significantly affected the public debate about the communist past in the Czech Republic. Different forms of historical justice - restitutions, rehabilitations, retributions and preventive lustrations are then briefly discussed to highlight underlying differences between the symbolic and pragmatic need of dealing with the past. I argue that the lustration process handled by state bureaucrats paradoxically inhibited the public discussion of the totalitarian past, its political impact and responsibility.
