It is widely accepted that the transportation system is a major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions, leading to an unsustainable future. While the problem is more intense in the developed countries, in which the transportation sector is responsible for approximately twenty five to forty percent of the overall greenhouse emissions, the developing world is following suit. Recent trends indicate an increasing demand for automobiles, in these countries, with potentially dire environmental consequences for the planet.
