This volume contains the papers presented at the seventh conference of the Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East at Avignon, France, 28–31 August 2008, which did not deal with the conference subject ‘the papacy and the crusades’ but instead discussed various aspects of the military orders and the papacy – a related subject. The papers explore some important and hitherto under-researched aspects of the history of the papacy and the military orders, both in the orders’ relations with the papacy and in other aspects of their work throughout Europe and the Levant.
