The Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), the state bird of Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas, is noted for the highly complex and melodious springtime song of males. It is ideal for studying mate choice and breeding success because the flamboyant male song is surprising in a socially monogamous bird. I conducted a three year study of mating and breeding success to test the hypothesis that male song, measured as mean bout length and versatility, could be explained by high rates of extra-pair matings, something which has been found in many other apparently monogamous birds. However, I found that extra-pair fertilization accounted for only 3.1% of all young, so my initial hypothesis was disproved. Because song could not...
Condition-dependence of male ornaments is thought to provide honest signals on which females can bas...
When mates are limited, individuals should allocate resources to mating tactics that maximize fitnes...
Models of sexual selection predict that socially monogamous females may gain direct or indirect (gen...
Around-the-clock behavioral observations indicated: (1) unmated males sang more than mated males, (2...
While many studies have looked at selection for large repertoire sizes in birds, few have explored t...
Many animals repeat standardized displays multiple times while attracting a mate or deterring a riva...
Many birds sing, but few so continuously and with such an enormous diversity of vocalizations as the...
Many studies of sexual selection assume that individuals have equal mating opportunities and that di...

We examined the relationship between singing and reproductive success in cowbirds. We amassed data f...
Most birds engage in extrapair copulations despite great differences across and within species. Besi...
