Background. Qualitative research makes an important contribution to midwifery knowledge. This paper is based on a keynote presentation that was given at the launch of the Doctoral Midwifery Research Society. Aim. To assist midwifery researchers in conducting qualitative research by sharing experiential knowledge. Method. A professor of midwifery gives her reflections on conducting qualitative research, identifying significant features that contribute toward its particular value. Results. Four features were identified as being significant – the value of unexpected findings, putting preconceptions aside, gaining insight from everyday events and the primacy of relationships.
