Using the 2010 data set of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV the CMS experiment has performed a wide range of measurements of quarkonium states which are being updated and extended with new data. In this contribution the CMS results on the differential cross sections of charmonium and bottomonium states are summarized and compared to theoretical predictions. Results on $J\psi$ and $\psi\mathrm{(2S)}$ production from the decay of b hadrons are reported. Finally a short comparison with quarkonium measurements in lead-lead collisions is presented
