The paper reviews the areas of practical significance of auto-ignition and the basic chemistry of gas-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons. The development of a chemical kinetic model of auto-ignition under engine-like conditions is outlined. The application of this and related models is discussed and our approach is contrasted with that of other workers. The paper concludes with a review of the model's short-comings and indicates areas for future development
