The number of analyses of ancient and late-antiquity metal objects has been growing exponentially in recent years; of particular interest among these are coins, not only for the tradition of numismatic studies but especially for the information that these studies can provide on the origin of the metals used, thus furnishing a nexus between mines and coins. The characterisation of coin composition is based on a combination of elementary and lead isotope analyses.
