We suggest that the entanglement energy associated to the entanglement entropy of the universe is the origin of the dark energy or the cosmological constant. Without fine tunings or $ad ~hoc$ assumptions many observed properties of the dark energy can be explained by using the entanglement energy and the holographic principle. Strikingly, from the number of degrees of freedom in the standard model, the equation of state parameter $\omega_\Lambda\simeq -0.93$ for the dark energy can be derived, which is consistent with the current observational data (SNIa+CMB+SDSS) with 1$\sigma$ level of confidence
