Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, 1998.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 106-108).The purpose of this thesis was to augment the research conducted by Dr. William Rowe, providing further understanding of the process parameters involved in bulk coatings utilizing sodium silicate slurries, and a basic understanding of the behavior of granular materials in rotary drum mixers. Rotary mixers are prime means for creating such coatings. Continuous mixers are preferred over batch models, in order to obtain high production volumes.
