Magnesium is a unique microelement in the human body which is necessary for all organs and systems to be sustained. During pregnancy, the need for magnesium is significantly increased due to functioning of the mother-placenta-fetus system, the intrauterine growth and development of the fetus. Maternal hypomagnesemia during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of placental insufficiency, delayed fetal growth, threatened abortion, premature birth, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia.
