The main physics reasons for building LEP are recalled, pointing in particular to the justifications for the choice of a large radius optimized for a bigger energy than is needed for a Z^{0}-factory. The accelerator complex is then briefly described together with some of the most innovative components. Finally, a brief outline of the possible detectors is followed by a review of the status of the project
